UFC Encyclopedia: 2012 Edition

The new edition of the UFC Encyclopedia is out. GriffonRawl's Jason Dent is mentioned three times:

• Fight of the night against Huerta (UFC 63)
• Submission of the night over Dollar (The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale)
• Semi finalist on season 9 of the Ultimate Fighter.

Jason Dent wins in Des Moines, Iowa

Jason Dent ended a 3 fight losing streak last night in Iowa with a submission win over the very tough Paul Bird. From a text early this morning:

“Stand up fight for round 1. I dropped him with a overhand right in round 2 and jumped on him to finish, ended up popping his arm with a kimura for the tapout. Felt good to win.”

The kimura had to be particularly satisfying over an opponent known for power submissions and whose last fight was a win over BJJ Black Belt by RNC.

Jason has a fight offer from Bellator for the April 20^th card in Cleveland pending approval from the Ohio Athletic Commission.

Combat Challenge Results

GR was to have three fights last night at Combat Challenge 19. Things didn't go our way. Ryan Lose's fight was canceled by Commission order. Joe Callari ran a competitive fight but the referee saw fit to stop the action very late in the third round. AJ Carl barely got out of the blocks before eating a strike and going in too fast for a countering takedown. His opponent took his back and sank a fight ending RNC about a minute into the first round.

Showing up to fight is half the battle, and there was a long dry spell where very few GR fighters had any action at all. We're paying for that now. The only way to shake of cage rust is to get in the cage and fight.

The next GR fighter up is Jason Dent. He takes on Paul Bird for the WWFC on April 7^th in Des Moines, IA. Following close on that fight, Donny Walker will face Frank Carabello for Bellatore at the IX Center in Cleveland on April 20^th

Josh Neer Seminar a Huge Success

The Josh Neer seminar drew a capacity crowd Saturday afternoon, filling GR's mat space almost to overflowing. The three hour seminar saw rounds of one on one training with Josh, free rolling and even some sparring to test technique.

The seminar had dozens of attendees who paid $50.00 to learn techniques from Neer. According to Jason the attendees raged in age from 18 to 35 with "a few over 40." He stressed it was much more than an autograph session.
 "He (Neer) taught stand-up and wrestling techniques," Dent said. "He also went over the ground game."
There was a "meet and greet" near the end of the seminar that was open to the public.
"It was a big seminar that was attended by amateur and pro fighters," Dent said. "It was hands-on instruction. It was really good. It was really successful."

Everyone who attended the seminar got a lot of training tips, techniques, and a great workout to boot. The seminar flew by even though it was 3hrs long.

Jason Dent on Sherdog Pros Pick: Edgar v Henderson

Sherdog has a recurring article in which they poll professional fighters on upcoming events.  GR's Jason Dent is a frequent contributor.

For the first time in more than a decade, the world’s leading mixed martial arts promotion will return to the Land of the Rising Sun.

UFC 144 on Saturday features a five-round lightweight title bout between champion Frankie Edgar and the surging Ben Henderson at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Many have already pegged it as a potential “Fight of the Year” candidate.

Sherdog.com caught up with a number of professional fighters and trainers to gauge their opinions on the UFC 144 headliner:

Jason Dent: I’ll take Edgar by TKO in round four.

Caged Vengeance Results

The fight between John Burbol and John Antanitis was fairly even on the feet. Burbol landed the bigger shots but in the end it was the takedowns that made the difference. An argument could be made that Burbol won round 2 having rocked Antanitis a few times. But the judges disagreed scoring the fight 30-27 x 3 for John Antanitis


Paul Compton's fight was a war. His opponent, Tony Castillo, came out with some very eccentric footwork, which kept Paul at bay for the first few minutes of the fight. Once Paul found his timing and range though and landed a few solid shots Castillo changed tactics to closing distance and wrestling. This worked better and the judges gave Castillo the edge in round 1.


Round 2 was Paul's. He worked the standup well, and did the necessary damage to take the round. Round 3 saw Castillo return to wrestling and control most of the round on the ground. Paul was very active from the bottom, but was not able to do enough to convince the judges. Final score on the bout was 29-28 for Tony Castillo

Three Belt Promotions

At the conclusion of the Relson Gracie Seminar, Relson took a few moments to acknowledge the hard work and progress of three of his students. Tony Reel, Paul Rehbergar, and Jason Dent were all advanced in rank.

• Jason Dent: 1 stripe Purple

Relson Gracie Seminar a Success

On January 20th Master Relson Gracie visited GR for a second time to deliver a seminar.  This one was a successful and memorable as the first.  In all 19 students benefited from his teaching over 3 hours, and all advanced their game.

GR brings in master teachers like Relson Gracie to expose it's students to advanced techniques not otherwise available without travel.  It's a good idea to take advantage of the opportunity when it's available.

At the end of the seminar 3 GR students, Jason Dent, TonyReel and Paul Rehbergar were all advanced in belt rank.  Congratulations to all three.  Details to follow.

Jr MMA Sleepover A Big Success

Jr. MMA Sleepover 1-20-2012! Sleepover consisted of self defense/anti bullying training, games, pizza & drinks, open gym, video games, breakfast, and Saturday morning MMA class then released to go home. Lots of fun and good times. We will host another one sooner than later.
